Each season the UKANET GNSS network is serviced by BAS engineers, with sites accessed by air (Twin Otter) or sea. Prior to 2018, sites had to be visited annually to download data. Over recent field seasons we have rolled out several improvements to the network: 23 of the 28 GNSS sites now transmit data in near-real-time, with data immediately openly available to all via the UNAVCO data portal;  power set-ups have been improved to allow year-round data collection, even through the polar winter; and we have begun to upgrade to Xeos Resolute instruments – low-power instruments that combine GNSS data collection and iridium transfer in a single unit specifically designed for polar deployment. Although sites still need to be visited when equipment breaks, we can now monitor this remotely thus significantly reducing the logistical cost of running the GNSS network.
