UKANET
GEODESY AND MODELLING
The geodesy and modelling team manage the UKANET GNSS network which measures deformation at bedrock outcrops along the Antarctic Peninsula and around the Weddell Sea. We seek to separate the contributions of past and present ice mass change to the observed deformation signal and hence better quantify Earth rheology beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. We draw on seismic measurements of Earth rheology, ice sheet history gleaned from geological studies, and surface mass balance constraints. Our overall goal is to better understand the feedbacks operating between land deformation and ice sheet dynamics.
SEISMOLOGY
The seismic team managed the UKANET seismic network and analysed the data using a variety of techniques. This included receiver function analysis to determine crustal thickness beneath stations, ambient noise tomography to infer spatial variations in crustal structure, and surface wave tomography to image the wave speed structure of the underlying upper mantle. Mantle wave speed variations are a good proxy for thermal variations, which in turn control viscosity variations.
